Review: Kultalampi

RELAXED LIFE AT KULTALAMPI

Helsinki City Theatre’s Kultalampi plays it safe. Arto af Hällström has directed the play, better known as a film, with the touch of a professional.

Matti Ranin and Tea Ista as the married couple in the play do not disappoint expectations. Ranin is a charismatic old guy whose anticipation of death is put aside by a teenage fishing buddy. Ista balances the show as Ranin’s wife, who keeps her feet on the ground and bugs at bay despite her husband’s whims.

Kristiina Halttu, Jouko Klemettilä, Kari Mattila and Mika Ranin complete the sympathetic gallery of characters.

The performance proceeds at a calm tempo. Everything is relaxed, even though the theme at hand is no less than the mortality of each of us. In a word, this nice performance is sure to find its own audience.
