Dancer in the Dark was brought from the film to the theater, and its lead actor is unbelievably good

In the tragic lead role of Dancer in the Dark, the almost blind Selma is seen as the brilliant Lumi Aunio, who does not suffer but fights.

From the very beginning, Lumi Aunio shines with a divine light, despite her deliberately shabby appearance. Played by her, Selma hovers above her situation, but not in a saintly way, but remains human. Instead of a play of suffering, the image of a person vigorously fighting for his rights is offered. In that sense, the work even seems like a feminist interpretation compared to von Trier’s humiliation imagery.

The supporting characters are also brilliant, the acting and singing flow seamlessly together with the dance.

And one glows above the rest.

It’s quite incomprehensible how casually and without squeezing Aunio constantly increases his turns, volume to the vocals, breadth and depth to his character. And every time I think that the peak has been reached, there is a new level. All this without any kind of pressure or feeling of compulsion. Aunio opens the way to eternal sorrow and love.
