Review: De obehöriga
Swedish playwright’s comedy about a housing company’s fear of outsiders resonates in Finland too
★★★★
In his play De Obehöriga, John Ajvide Lindqvist portrayed the fears of affluent Stockholmers. In Lilla Teatern’s production, a housing company meeting in Töölö takes on surreal proportions.
Director David Sandqvist knows where Lilla Teatern’s strengths lie: with Pia Runnakko and Joachim Wigelius. Runnakko lets loose as Liisa, a fervent opponent of racists whose own words simultaneously fuel racism. Wigelius, meanwhile, is both hilarious and horrifying as Lasse, a chairman who believes in order but ultimately sows chaos.
It is also a pleasure to see Sampo Sarkola on stage again after a long absence. He plays the neurotic Bosse with microscopic sensitivity, never resorting to drawing attention to himself.
