Review: Kinky Boots
INTEREST RATES TO THE CEILING!
You have to be a pretty hardened serious person if this thing doesn’t sink! Helsinki City Theatre’s Kinky Boots is such a firework of music, dance and high heels that even a theatre-goer who is squeamish about the genre is sure to relent. Entertainment at its best.
The performance has everything in place: catchy rhythm, skilful singing and dancing, as well as sparkling costumes and sets. The main character, Lola, aka Simon (Lauri Mikkola), is stunningly beautiful, sensitive and strong. His presence is downright magical. Similarly, the Angels, male dancers dressed as women, are charming – one can only admire with envy how men can have such beautiful, long legs!
The basic message of the story, which praises tolerance, is borrowed from Oscar Wilde: “Be yourself – everyone else is already taken”. Dare to be yourself. And let others be, too.
