The Mousetrap came to Helsinki

The mousetrap is a play written by Agatha Christie. Now it can be seen on the Arena stage of the Helsinki City Theatre.

Agatha Christie’s The Mousetrap is a true classic. It premiered in London in 1952. Since then, it has been performed without interruption in London. It’s amazing!

The events of Mousetrap take place in the English countryside in the 1950s. Mollie (Elina Keinonen) and Giles (Severi Saarinen) are a young couple who, at the beginning of the play, are about to open an inn in their inherited mansion.

The first guests arrive at the guesthouse. Then there is a snowstorm that causes traffic to stop, the phone does not work, etc.

Since this is a detective story, of course someone dies. One of the guests, Mrs. Boyle (Helena Haaranen), is found dead. The mean-spoken lady experienced her fate. Who is the murderer?

Of course, I will not reveal the murderer, as we viewers were told at the beginning of the performance.

The plot twists of The Mousetrap are typical of Agatha Christie: at some point, it feels like anyone could be a murderer. Everyone has some secrets.

Directed by Miika Muranen , the play pays homage to Agatha Christie’s legacy. I think the casting has been successful. As Christopher Wren, Sauli Suonpää is a suitably peculiar guy. Helena Haaranen’s wife Boyle is downright chilling. The appearances and performances of Risto Kaskilahti, Sanna-June Hyde and Santeri Kinnunen fit the characters very well. Joel Hirvonen’s sergeant Trotter investigates the murder vigorously.

I also liked Katariina Kirjavainen’s set design and Laura Dammert’s costumes. They had the spirit of the 1950s.

The Mousetrap is traditional theatre in a good way. All in all, a decent performance.
