Review: Silence

Bravo! Silence is a stunningly wonderful dance piece that must be experienced

Helsinki City Theatre’s Silence is an enchanting dance piece that takes the viewer to a space between separation and connection, silence and poetry, laughter and acrobatic somersaults. The performance, which is currently sold out, will hopefully return to the stage for another season. The breathtakingly impressive and bubbling dance piece would even be perfect as a prelude to the Castle Festival. Bravo Helsinki Dance Company and Kinetic Orchestra!

“An impressive and captivating work! Enchanting dancers in tailcoats took over the Small Stage of the Helsinki City Theatre, and they have already become the dance event of the autumn. It’s great that the City Theatre has its own dance group, Helsinki Dance Company, which manages to put on world-class performances like this. Kinetic Orchetra is also involved in the collaboration.

“A really great performance that started with the harmony of atoms and moved on to a sense of separation – how to search to find. At first, it reminded me of frog spawn in a salt pond that disintegrates and separates – and yet is one. Contact with each other was sought and achieved through fine movement language. Because there must be separation in order to create a connection. You have to be connected to be separate. Otherwise, silence is just sound.

“Wow, that’s already a poem! I, on the other hand, breathed the work into me.  Compared to theatre, there is so much free space in dance that that space can sometimes be filled with your own thoughts. That’s why I try to silence my brain and thoughts in dance performances.  This performance was like a bubbling meditation, even though I don’t even know how to meditate.  While watching, it occurred to me that this tailcoat acrobatic art performance would be perfect for the upcoming Castle Celebrations – as a prelude before the guests. The somersaults at the end crowned the whole. Toasts should be raised to this kind of skill and Finnish culture. What a skill, what a joy!
