Is love enough if you run out of money?
Not much has changed in man, at least not in his relationship with money and the power it brings. Maria Jotun’s The Golden Calf is as relevant today as it was during the First World War, where the events of the play take place.
This play is full of female power. The most frantic of them is her little sister Lahja (Helmi-Leena Nummela), whose teenage girlish defiance and cheerfulness are joyful to watch. The money-hungry Eed (Vappu Nalbantoglu) and her speculative mother (Heidi Herala) are not overshadowed either.
What about love? Will it disappear if your livelihood is threatened?
