Threesome – a full-fledged comedy

In September, I went to see the Threesome screening at Studio Pasila. All I knew about the performance beforehand was that it was a comedy. This kind of approach suits me perfectly and thus I avoid building any settings, stories and plot lines for myself in advance. I give that task to the performance itself, with its actors, directors and sets.

If you don’t want to know anything about the plot, stop reading here and hurry to the theatre to see the performance itself (the latest performance is on Saturday 30.11.2019).

Very quickly, at the beginning of the performance, it became clear that there are three actors on whom the whole show was built, and the plot twists and turns involve a relationship where one is totally bored with their partner and starts to think about how to annoy them so that the departure from the relationship would happen as if by itself without anyone really being the bad guy. The viewer might think that why not just say something about it and get away with it, but (laughs)…

The performances were genuine from the beginning and amazing to watch. Even I, as a spectator, felt intensely involved in each role on the shoulder of each actor, even though I sat strictly on the side of the audience. In other words, a great performance and unrestrained handling of a problem that is sometimes encountered in a relationship!

As a performance, Threesome is a fast-paced, gripping, at times tragicomic but successful comedic, slightly headless relationship adventure. As a spectator, I was amazed, laughed, wondered, laughed, amazed, laughed, advised, laughed at the performance. And finally, to congratulate myself and laugh that I’ve always been able to talk about things and that even when I was younger, I haven’t ended up with such comical solutions in failed relationships.

After the performance, I got acquainted with the background information of the comedy. The actors of the young generation made an impression in their roles in this comedy and I believe that three of them will be heard in the future. No one became my particular favorite, but all three actors were top performers. Everyone liked it nicely, even though it’s certainly difficult in comedies.

A comedy written by the French Clément Michel and translated into Finnish by Reita Lounatvuori. The main roles are played by Pauli (Jarkko Niemi), Sofia (Elina Hietala) and Martin (Olli Rahkonen). Directed by Liisa Mustonen and costumes and set design (which was just right for the performance) by Tellervo Syrjäkari.

I warmly recommend the performance!

If only because laughing is just so therapeutic. And you get to find out for yourself with a twinkle in your eye whether the Helsinki City Theatre’s performance Threesome is a full-fledged comedy or a threat, an opportunity or perhaps a solution…
