Kaksi mustiin asuihin pukeutunutta tanssijaa esittää nykyaikaista rutiinia oranssissa valaistuksessa; toinen kyykistyy ja ojentaa kätensä kohti lattiaa, kun taas toinen istuu takana, hieman hämärtyneenä, dramaattisessa asennossa.

Kuusi ihmistä seisoo hämärästi valaistulla näyttämöllä, viidellä heistä on yllään minimaaliset tummat vaatteet. Yksi nainen kuiskaa keskellä olevalle shortseihin pukeutuneelle paidattomalle miehelle, ja muut katsovat dramaattisissa asennoissa. Valaistus luo tunnelmallisen, intensiivisen ilmapiirin.

Pitkät vaaleat hiukset omaava henkilö harmaassa mekossa tanssii lavalla paljain jaloin, kallistaa päätään taaksepäin ja nostaa toisen jalkansa taakseen tummaa taustaa vasten.

Lavalla esiintyy kolme tanssijaa; yksi makaa lattialla mustissa shortseissa, toinen kumartuu hänen ylleen kurottaen, ja kolmas harmaaseen mekkoon pukeutunut tanssija liikkuu energisesti taustalla.

He ottavat dramaattisia, ilmeikkäitä asentoja, jotkut nojaavat taaksepäin tai nauravat kirkkaassa valaistuksessa tummalla taustalla.

Kaksi naista esiintyy lavalla, jota ympäröivät pystyssä olevat lasipullot; toinen nainen kaatuu tai istuu lattialla, kun taas toinen on ilmassa kädet ojennettuina, ikään kuin tanssisi tai olisi putoamassa. Kohtaus on dramaattisesti valaistu.

Kaksi nykytanssijaa esittää näyttämöllä ilmeikkään poseerauksen, jossa toinen tanssija polvistuu ja toinen kiertyy heidän ympärilleen. Molemmilla on yllään tummat topit ja väljät, ruudulliset housut, joita korostaa dramaattinen keltainen valaistus.

Kaksi tummiin mekkoihin pukeutunutta naista esittää nykytanssia lavalla.

Lavan takana on useita maljakoita, joissa on punaisia kukkia.

Ryhmä näyttää harrastavan nykytanssiesitystä minimaalisella lavalla, jonka tausta on tumma.

Ryhmä tanssijoita esiintyy lavalla. Edessä oleva tanssija, jolla on pitkät vaaleat hiukset, nojaa taaksepäin silmät kiinni, kun muut liikkuvat ilmeikkäästi taustalla. Valaistus on dramaattinen ja lavastus on minimaalinen.

Lyhyet tummat hiukset omaava henkilö, jolla on yllään valko-mustakuvioinen takki, jossa on koristeellinen rintakoru, seisoo seinää vasten, jossa on pystysuuntaisia varjoja, ja hymyilee kameralle.

Hymyilevä lyhythiuksinen henkilö, jolla on sininen paita ja tumma vetoketjullinen huppari, poseeraa vaaleaa taustaa vasten.

Kellokumpu’s simple cannon

Dance Company goes into ecstasy Norwegian Ina Christel Johannessen has already earned her place in the series of important choreographers. Most recently, she delighted in Finland in 2005 with her work … it’s only a rehearsal. The premiere made for Helsinki Dance Company thus raised great expectations. The interpretation of the three excellent dancers is guaranteed HDC quality. Johannessen’s movement is disciplined, sharp and well thought out. The secret lies in the precision of the details. In terms of atmosphere, Something Spooked the Horses is darkly serious. The entire stage image is simmering in the decaying colours of autumn, despite the flowers on the sides of the stage. Sofia Hilli and Jenni-Elina Lehto are two strong women, to whom Valtteri Raekallio gives a surprisingly soft contrast. But will this create a triangle drama, or what? The idea feels unfinished and in the end, despite all the great movement, a dull taste remains. The performance now seems to lack the originality that was … it’s only in a rehearsal. In the literature, this would be called intermediate work. That’s what it inevitably is – okay, but it doesn’t leave many marks. Simo Kellokumpu , on the other hand, surprises with his fresh and strong work Daydream Junkies. Of course, there would always be enough sealing and sanding, but even as it is, it keeps its grip. We have to wait a while for happiness and dreams from the beginning, until we get to an effective and very cool shoulder-raising unison line. Then it tears. The entire brilliant ensemble is carried away by ecstatic ecstasy reminiscent of a revival meeting. Strobe lights underline the experience with a matter-of-fact minimum. Kellokumpu culminates many scenes for Unto Nuora to perform, which is right. She is an absolutely phenomenal dancer and exerciser – even in this group. His movements are super precise and finished. Heidi Naakka also has a wild throw. Kellokumpu has said that he does not want to take a stand or declare anything. Many scenes are left purely to the viewer to interpret. What is the Messiah-like male figure that others kiss? Perhaps these visions just stem from the subconscious of the creator. Or are they trips for naptime junkies? The minimalist electron boom of the soundscape in both works brought me to the brink of migraines.

EMOTIONS, STYLE AND VIRTUOSITY THE WAY OF HELSINKI DANCE COMPANYDaydream Junkies by Simo Kellokumpu, a young generation of Finnish choreographers, is an exciting dance piece. There is no need to worry about the opening of the name as much as there is in the field of modern visual art. Of course, you can get hints of “daydream junkies”, but the picture can be expanded to include a life-long journey, walking in everyday life, its established, safe, but also numbing patterns. When stimuli appear along the path, they are reacted to with varying degrees of intensity. In the case of an individual, such are great emotions, falling in love, passion, jealousy, while religions and ideologies can give rise to outright mass suggestion. However, the most important thing in the choreography is the expressiveness of the instruments. It works excellently, the movements have spontaneous strength, surrender and defiance. The group is intact, but with strong soloist parts, it gives freedom to its members, encourages dreams, does not tame. Beautiful, convincing movement vocabulary. The work by Norwegian Ina Christel Johannessen offers a link to the stage image or vice versa. Whether we take it up or not, it seems to matter as little as the name code “something scared the horses”. Rather, it may be that the code is not meant to be fully opened, as above. In any case, the set is pleasing to the eye, the bottle garden, the flower in each bottle. It is also utilised, by picking flowers randomly or purposefully, or by walking among them without seeing anything. The glass shards also probably have their symbolism. The trio of dancers can be seen to embody both addiction and introversion, with the latter emphasized with angular, even spastic movements. The triangle drama, which exudes technical prowess, is not allowed to follow a predictable path, the dance is complete, the narrative is left open.Helsinki Dance Company’s premiere night was full of quality and style. That’s good, but what I missed is comedy. Truthfulness and the harshness of movement in the art climate in general deserve warm laughter as a counterpart. This group is also known to stretch to that. And draws the audience with it.

A great celebration of movement If you want to predict something about the future trends of contemporary dance in our country based on the premiere of the Helsinki City Theatre’s dance group, it is that we are moving from strong theatricality, speech, singing and visual abundance to pure dance movement. The premieres of both the Norwegian Ina Christel Johannessen and Simo Kellokumpu were clearly focused on movement. And specifically for a dance movement that uses the whole body in a versatile and holistic way. Both Johannessen’s Somehting Spooked The Horses and Kellokumpu’s Daydream Junkies were a celebration of movement and even surprisingly similar in terms of movement quality. Neither was clearly descriptive, but there were relationships and changes in them in both. Johanssen’s very physical work is in a certain way clearer and sharper in its movements. It also has a strong sense of drama and danger. In the performance of three dancers, I found a man and two women – a mother and a daughter? – which had a clear beginning, climax and conclusion. As the wonderful dancers in the work, Sofia Hilli, Jenni-Elina Lehto and Valtteri Raekallio were extremely sensitive and strong at the same time. There was something going on in them both internally and externally. The sea of bottles and flowers on the edges of the stage could be interpreted as a symbol of both the vast landscapes and the inner lives of the characters. The unknown threat surrounding everything was manifested above all in the dark tones of the music compilation and also in Jukka Huitila’s lights, which at times turned the entire stage into an old brown photograph.
