When Mr Puntila is drunk – and he is drunk often – he is the most humane and egalitarian man imaginable.
Life is one long celebration and everyone is his friend, every woman his beloved. But heaven help them when he sobers up. Then he reveals himself as a tyrannical master with not a shred of compassion for his workers. Steering Puntila through these tempestuous moods is his chauffeur Matti, who always knows exactly which way the wind is blowing.
Puntila plans to marry his daughter Eeva off to a stuffy embassy attaché, but while drunk, he decides that Matti would make a better son-in-law – causing a scandal in high society. But another sober morning dawns, and Matti is sent packing.
Brecht and Wuolijoki’s comedy is regarded as one of European drama’s best-known portrayals of the relationship between master and servant. Director Kari Heiskanen brings fresh nuances to this classic comedy.
