When Mr. Puntila is drunk – and he is often drunk – he is the most humane and equal man.

Life is a celebration and all people are his friends, all women are his beloved. But help me when his head is cleared. Then he becomes an autocratic master who does not feel the slightest pity for his workers. In these storms of mental states, Puntila is guided by his chauffeur Matti, who keeps a close eye on where the wind is blowing at any given time.

Puntila is about to marry his daughter Eeva to a dry embassy secretary, but when drunk, he finds Matti to be a better son-in-law and causes a scandal in better circles. But a clear morning arrives again and it’s Matti’s going.

The comedy by Brecht and Wuolijoki is considered one of the best-known depictions of the relationship between a master and his servant in European drama. The classic comedy gets fresh tones in director Kari Heiskanen’s treatment.
