A production driven by exceptional dance technique and expressive power, inspired by the classic ballet of the same name from centuries past.
In French, it is La Fille mal gardée – and yes, the accent really is part of the title. Like countless other interpreters of the ballet over the years, Helsinki Dance Company takes considerable liberties with the story, style and staging, while openly flirting with the traditional form of classical ballet. The stage is also bursting with outstanding dance talent.
On a more serious note, the production is a portrait of a woman – a woman with agency – who has grown to question her own respectability and compulsion to please. Of the roles in the original ballet Huonosti vartioitu tyttö, only the principal dancer remains. All the male roles have been removed, and the men transformed into fantastical unicorns.
