I rummet intill – eller vibratorpjäsen
The 1880s, New York State. Young Mrs Givings twiddles her thumbs in her beautiful drawing room while her husband, Dr Givings, treats women suffering from hysteria in the adjoining room. Strange buzzing and excited cries can be heard through the wall: “Oh, oh, oh God, OH!”
Has that piqued your curiosity too?
Dr Givings is a man of science. He is developing an electric vibrator to treat his patients and would never dream of trying the device on his own wife. Catherine Givings is bored, frustrated and sad because she has had to hire a wet nurse to feed her baby. With the help of one of her husband’s patients, she begins to investigate what is really happening between the sheets in the adjoining room.
I rummet intill – eller vibratorpjäsen is based on the astonishing true story of how the electric vibrator was developed as a medical device to treat the fictitious diagnosis of hysteria. American playwright Sarah Ruhl’s feminist comedy takes a sharp and humorous look at the history of gynaecology and the beliefs and misconceptions on which it was built for so long.
