Jerusalem
The Struggle for the Soul of the NationHuom! Poistunut ohjelmistosta!
Voted the best play of the 2000s, Jerusalem is a raucous comedic drama full of verbal fireworks and colourful characters. In the work, which has become an exceptional phenomenon, the present meets the mythical past, as a group of social exclusions struggle for their self-esteem under the leadership of Johnny Byron.
Johnny “Rooster” Byron (Santeri Kinnunen) is a former killer who has travelled the world and seen life. He lives outside the city in a caravan, in a forest that he claims to own. The city authorities disagree on forest management; They have decided to clear it to make way for a new residential area.
During the traditional village festivals, St. George’s Day, both parties gather their strength for the final challenge. Johnny is a rebel, a fun-maker, a self-mythologized jester king, and he vows not to give up without a fight. He doesn’t want to give up his freedom or betray his friends, who get to escape the harsh reality for a moment at his party.
This work, which has been declared a modern British classic, unabashedly combines comedy and drama. Through verbal mastery, deep characters and its clear and at the same time contradictory social reflection, the work draws a startling picture of the present day.
Jerusalem sparked a wide social debate, conquering both London’s West End and New York’s Broadway!
