Helsinki Dance Company’s guest choreographer this spring is Ervi Sirén
On 19 February, Helsinki Dance Company will premiere a new work by Ervi Sirén, a strong creator of Finnish contemporary dance, JUICY – just came to mind. Sirén, who is visiting the group for the first time as a guest choreographer, draws on the sense and sensuality of the body.
“For me, Juicy means sensuality and a sense of life. I can’t make a work about, for example, climate change, love or violence. Juicy’s exercises have started from sensing the body. Every person can be sensual if they want to. It’s globally significant, and maybe that’s what I’m saying,” Sirén says.
JUICY – came to mind through free movement development features six skilled dancers from Helsinki Dance Company: Jenni-Elina von Bagh, Heidi Naakka, Sofia Ylinen, Kai Lähdesmäki, Mikko Paloniemi and Eero Vesterinen. Also on stage will be Ilkka Heinonen, who plays the violone. The musician, who specialises in folk music, has also composed most of the music heard in the work.
The costume designer is Cris af Enehielm, who is also known as a visual artist, director and actor. William Iles is responsible for the set and lighting design.
