Helsinki 1975. Tova Randers, an ordinary single mother of two, walks down Fredrikinkatu on her way home from her job at the city library. It’s a warm late summer evening and Tova is turning forty, so she decides to celebrate with a plank steak and a glass of red in all simplicity. At the Vanha Maestro restaurant, she meets Martti Wester, who invites her to his home. The evening ends with Martti raping Tova.
But Tova does not intend to become a rape victim. She wants revenge. The only question is how?
For the first time, Märta Tikkanen’s cult novel will be staged in Finland. When Men Cannot Be Raped was published in 1975, it sparked heated debate, and Märta Tikkanen was threatened and hated. Today, Tikkanen’s “gooey shock novel” is an international classic.
