The programme leaflet recounts a play based on a real event backgrounds commendably. All in all, the well-known cast is confident and the play progresses in an exemplary manner. Alongside violence, there is room for audience-friendly, even comical situations. Humour is spiced up meeting between Russians and Finns in situations where in fact It was a game far away. Simple staging is effective.Ending the play has caused difficulties. Agathach’s Christ-like instead of an explanatory final monologue, I was fascinated by the idea that all the clues and the possibilities would have been left open. Yes, in the last centuryThe City Theatre’s Journey to Porkkala is a visually handsome and lively performanceHelsinki during the Interim Peace is shattered like a Stalker’s landscape. There is a fight over sugar cubes and substitute coffee, but at the same time, the privileged members of the Control Commission staying at Hotel Torni are drinking coffee with cognac and eating pastries. The City Theatre’s small stage opens up to the aftermath of 1944 in its visually handsome and sense-blowing play On the Way to Porkkala. However, Porkkala is only a carrot in the name. Maija Pekkanen’s exquisite costumes depicting the epoch and Katariina Kirjavainen’s spectacularly multifaceted set design create a porous and vivid landscape in the performance, both literally and on the level of images. The visual solutions of the performance carry the evening.

At the same time, the play reflects the post-war chaos and moods through individual human destinies. In the paranoid atmosphere left behind by the war, anyone can be a whistleblower, a spy – or a murderer. The plot of the play revolves around the events of the night of November 3, 1944, when Captain Ivan Belov was shot by an unknown person in Lauttasaari. The Red Army captain accompanied the military column on its way from Helsinki to Porkkala, which is where the play itself got its name. However, the events do not take place in Porkkala, but in Helsinki after the armistice agreement.

Read moreWHO MURDERED IVAN BELOV?On the Way to Porkkala is a comedic thriller about the years of danger in Finland Question: What is the most investigated single murder case in Finnish criminal history? The case of Kyllikki Saari or the tent killings on Lake Bodom? Neither of these, at least if the book written by Risto Niku in 2003 is to be believed. The most investigated is the murder of Captain Ivan Belov. Well, Lake Bodom, which has recently been carefully dug up again, may have already gone to the top in terms of the amount of paper, but on the politically interesting scale, the camping trip of Nils Gustafsson and co. does not come close to the case of Russian Captain Belov. Ivan Belov, who was travelling with a Russian military column, was shot at close range in Lauttasaari, Helsinki, on 3 November 1944, in the darkness of the night. The name of the murderer was never solved. This deliciously fascinating mystery serves as the starting point for the Helsinki City Theatre’s play On the Way to Porkkala. The end result is also quite delicious.
