Hoas’ shared apartment brings together two very different young women: Elisa is an outwardly restrained business student who has just moved from the countryside to the city, and Saara is a charismatic, bohemian literature student. Contrary to expectations, women fall in love with each other. Twelve years later, they have a young son and a mortgage. Then Saara falls in love again.

When Saara and Elisa suddenly fall in love with each other, it is the early 2000s, and they are forced to think about what others think of their relationship. But the years go by, the relationship changes to family, and at some point, the pressure from the outside eases.

At the heart of the play is the long relationship between two different people. Elisa is traditional, from the countryside and strongly attached to her parents. Saara is a dashing city dweller who does not always remember to treat her loved ones fairly. Questions related to parenthood and family life also come up.

Utilising cinematic narration, I Chose You is a fresh play with warm humour about a relationship in 2000s Helsinki. It sharply and tenderly depicts the entire arc of a relationship, from falling in love that takes you off your feet to an oatmeal-flavored everyday life.

The play is based on Laura Lehtola’s novel of the same name, I Chose You (2020). He has dramatised the work into a play together with director Milja Sarkola.
