A shared Hoas flat brings together two very different young women: Elisa is a reserved business student who has just moved from the countryside to the city, while Saara is a charismatic, bohemian literature student. Against all expectations, they fall in love. Twelve years later, they have a young son and a mortgage. Then Saara falls in love again.

When Saara and Elisa unexpectedly fall in love, it is the early 2000s, and they find themselves worrying about what others will think of their relationship. But the years pass, their relationship grows into a family, and eventually the pressure from the outside world begins to ease.

At the heart of the play is a long-term relationship between two very different people. Elisa is traditional, from the countryside and strongly attached to her parents. Saara is a bold city-dweller who does not always remember to treat those closest to her fairly. The play also explores questions of parenthood and everyday family life.

With its cinematic storytelling, Minä valitsin sinut is a fresh play filled with warm humour, portraying a relationship in 21st-century Helsinki. Both tender and incisive, it traces the full arc of a relationship, from the dizzying rush of falling in love to the oatmeal-flavoured routines of everyday life.

The play is based on Laura Lehtola’s novel of the same name, Minä valitsin sinut (2020). Lehtola adapted the novel for the stage together with director Milja Sarkola.
