Helsinki City Theatre is one of seven professional theatres taking part in the nationwide Nuori Näyttämö project organised by Työväen Näyttämöiden Liitto. Four leading playwrights have written plays for young people aged 13–19, which youth theatre groups will bring to the stage with theatre professionals serving as their mentors. The project will culminate in five theatre festivals hosted by local professional theatres in April and May 2018, featuring 27 world-premiere interpretations of four plays across Finland.

Artists from Helsinki City Theatre are mentoring seven youth groups from Uusimaa. Helsinki City Theatre’s partner groups are Annantalon teatteriryhmä Vire, Martinlaakson lukio, Tapiolan lukio, Kallion lukio, Järvenpään teatterin nuoret, Teatteri Werner from Porvoo and Havukosken koulun draamaryhmä. Their mentors are actors Heidi Herala, Tuukka Leppänen, Eija Vilpas, Sanna Saarijärvi, Marjut Toivanen and Sari Haapamäki, and set designer Antti Mattila.

Each youth group has chosen one of the four new texts to stage. Exploring the world of young people from a variety of perspectives, the plays for 13-19-year-olds were written by Gunilla Hemming, Pipsa Longa and Veikko Nuutinen. The fourth play was written by Rasmus Lindberg for a similar Swedish project in 2014.

The productions by groups from the Helsinki Metropolitan Area will be presented at a youth theatre festival from 4.–6.5.2018. Jointly organised by Helsinki City Theatre and the Finnish National Theatre, the festival will feature a total of 13 youth productions at Studio Pasila and the Finnish National Theatre’s Small Stage! The nationwide project will culminate in a closing festival at Tampereen Työväen Teatteri from 4.–5.8.2018.

The project is supported by the Finnish Cultural Foundation, the Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation and Kansan Sivistysrahasto.
