A newly written comedy about love
On Love is based on the French writer Stendhal’s (Henri Beyle) debut work. The play describes the main character Stendhal’s sufferings in a breathtakingly unrequited love. True to his philosophy, the protagonist also sees the comic in his tragic situation and develops a theory of the essence of love on the basis of his own experiences. “By cross-reading, among other things. In Stendhal’s second biographical work, I allowed myself to reconstruct the author’s time in Milan in the fateful years of 1820–22. He really wants a woman he can respect by his side, not a wimp. But how will he be able to explain it to her, when neither he nor she can know how it will be done. Before their time, they are, after all, trapped by conventions. If Stendhal can be said to be a prototype for the eternal single, he actually represents a type of person that is becoming more and more common, not to say the most common. What is it that person is looking for? What do you really want – really?
