For some, the role of a servant fits like a glove, but for others, it starts to wear you down over time. What about when the nerve no longer holds?
The Servant tells about Detective Superintendent Arto Jylhämö, who will give a seminar lecture on the topic “Human nature from the perspective of the criminal police”. In addition to the detective inspector, the play features a cavalcade of service professionals, from midwives and priests to mental health nurses and hairdressers.
The Servant is a monologue play written by Kari Hotakainen for the Helsinki City Theatre. The play examines servanthood – whether it is just a profession or a character deeper in a person. At all stages of life, we meet people working in the service profession, from the midwife who witnesses the first cry to the gravedigger. How much can you ask of a person, where is the limit when the servant’s measure is full? The role of the servant is played by the multi-talented Martti Suosalo, who not only performs all the roles in the play, but also directs the performance.
