The story of Prinsessa Ruusunen takes on new dimensions as the princess of the classic fairy tale becomes a modern-day teenager grappling with the growing pains of adolescence. And to make the story even more extraordinary, instead of sleeping for a hundred years, she wakes up in the wildly exuberant 1970s, just as her own parents’ teenage adventures are reaching fever pitch.

ShedHelsinki’s musical adaptation of Prinsessa Ruusunen blends a classic fairy tale with a traditional school-based youth musical in a completely unprecedented way. The musical Prinsessa Ruusunen – Paluu tulevaisuuteen is based on an original script by Chickenshed Theatre (UK). The production is brought to life by the teachers of StepUp School’s Skene musical theatre school, led by director Marco Bjurström. The performances are conducted by the brilliant Tuomas Kesälä.

“Like our role model, London’s Chickenshed Theatre, we want to show that the stage belongs to everyone. Our cast is a large and diverse group of courageous performers ready to put themselves out there. The musical features around 150 children and young people aged 7–20 from the Helsinki metropolitan area, joined by musical theatre professionals and students. Some of the performers get around in wheelchairs, some are stepping onto a major stage for the very first time, while others have years of theatre experience. Despite our differences—and because of them—we are one big Shed family, and we couldn’t be happier!”
