Welcome to the bottom of Swan Lake, where the light is refracted more sharply than usual. The fictional Prince Siegfried, King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky are swimming in the mud.

The performance is a collaborative work of dramatic art by Katariina Havukainen, Julia Jäntti and Mikko Kauppila, which presents images and fantasies of non-normative desire. The boundaries of the body ripple.

Valkoiseen paitaan pukeutunut henkilö on upotettu vedellä täytettyyn lasisäiliöön, jota ympäröivät vihreissä maljakoissa olevat keltaiset kukat. Pehmeä sininen kangas ja lempeä valaistus luovat unenomaisen, surrealistisen tunnelman.

Valkoiseen paitaan ja sukkiin pukeutunut henkilö kyyristyy vedellä täytetyssä lasisäiliössä kasvot lähellä pintaa. Säiliön reunalla on valkoinen kangas. Valaistus on hämärä ja dramaattinen.

Valkoiseen paitaan pukeutunut henkilö polvistuu lasilaatikon sisällä, jota valaisee dramaattinen kultainen valo, ja hänen alapuolellaan ja takanaan on kangas, joka luo surrealistisen ja teatraalisen tunnelman.

Valkoiseen paitaan pukeutunut henkilö käyttää snorkkelia vedessä, kun hän on uppoutuneena veteen, heijastuksia sisältävän lasin läpi, ja etualalla näkyy hämärtynyt kasvi.

Henkilö makaa lattialla pehmeässä valaistuksessa, ympärillä on erilaisia vedellä täytettyjä lasiastioita, ja hänen kasvonsa näkyvät osittain lasin taittumisen läpi.

I predict a lot of interesting roles and great success in the field of art for Mikko Kauppila, who will graduate this spring. Of course, I could have predicted them already a few years ago, when I saw him in the adventures of TTT’s Master Elf in the role of Prince Night Eye or in many interesting parts in Eemeli in Vaahteramäki. But now this thesis presentation Siegfried – now we are on a completely different level. Here is a multi-talented Master of Arts in Theatre and Drama, who is at the same time sensitive and bold, taking a stand and introspective. An absolutely dizzying evening!

I’ve managed to see Mikko Kauppila, who graduates from Näty this spring, in several stories and I’ve really liked what I’ve seen. A couple of years ago, I interviewed him for my blog and somehow even then I could sense from the answers that he would still do something completely unique, unique. The interview left me with the phrase “kinesthetic empathy” and a definition of it: “Not everything can be understood in a rational way. Theatre has an impact and is impressed. For me, how I represent and represent my own gender is also important in my own acting.” (Read the full interview here.)
