Kati Korosuo’s solo work The Artist Is at Home is a banal spectacle from a narcissistic artist for an audience thirsty for scandals. In the performance, documentarity and the use of the self as material are emphasized in their egocentricity, to the point of being disturbing. Our time is a stage where everything has already been said and done, shown and seen. What else can the performer’s body mirror?
The starting point for the work is the recurring nightmares about turtles that Kati has been seeing for almost 25 years, which she started documenting on video in 2012. This deliciously honest diary juxtaposes the distorted bodily experience of dreams with the artist’s everyday reality, acting as a bridge between the private subconscious and the collective consciousness. In the work, which springs from physicality, laconic video material collides with a nightmarish stage body.
Kati Korosuo is a Helsinki-based dance artist who is interested in methods that dismantle hierarchies. In addition to her performing work, she has developed her own artistic practice, a dance technique called Dances to a Beat (DTB), which she has taught extensively in Finland and abroad since 2013. Kati is also a member of the performance art collective in Other Spaces and also works as one of the artistic directors of the Höyhentämö theatre association.
