Helsinki City Theatre’s curator meetings for independent arts sector artists in 2026

Helsinki City Theatre will organise monthly curator meetings in 2026 for independent artists working in contemporary dance and performance. The meetings will seek ambitious, forward-looking ideas for new works for larger stages. They are intended for professional artists working in Finland.
The curator meetings offer artists an opportunity to present their ideas and receive feedback. The aim is to strengthen Helsinki City Theatre’s collaboration with the independent arts sector and support artists’ professional development. We will help develop the most promising ideas through individual coaching.
Artists can meet either Valtteri Raekallio, Director of Helsinki Dance Company, or Riikka Thitz, Curator of the Contemporary Performance Stage. Each meeting lasts 45 minutes.
What should you consider when developing your proposal?
- We plan our programme approximately two to three years in advance.
- Productions will be staged either at Helsinki City Theatre’s Small Stage (max. 318 seats, including wheelchair spaces) or Studio Pasila (326 seats, including wheelchair spaces).
- Helsinki Dance Company productions are always ensemble works featuring the company’s own dancers. Freelance guest artists may also be involved.
- Our productions always have a run of at least 10 performances.
- We do not programme visiting productions.
How can you prepare for the meeting?
- You should present a clear concept at the meeting: what is the idea behind the work, and how will it be realised in practice?
- How does your work engage with dance or contemporary art and the world around us?
- Include reference materials in your proposal, such as video, audio, mood boards or other content that will help us better understand your idea.
Where and when will the meetings be held?
- Location: Helsinki City Theatre’s main building (Ensi linja 2) or via Teams.
- Dates: You can book a meeting between August and December 2026.
