The spring premiere of Helsinki City Theatre’s dance company Helsinki Dance Company (HDC) is a co-production with Carl Knif Company (CKC). The two-colour fugue is a moving study of the age-old relationship between music and dance. The new dance, choreographed by Carl Knif, will premiere on 19 March at Studio Pasila.
In his Two-Colour Fugue, Carl Knif collides dance and improvisational methods with Dmitri Shostakovich’s classical music. The precise formal language of the preludes and fugues composed by Shostakovich for piano meets the richly sprawling expression of the dancers.
“This is a significant point in my career. It’s great to be here, as I’ve admired Helsinki Dance Company throughout my career. HDC has been a showcase for what is happening internationally in the field of dance. The company has been visited by notable choreographers from around the world, and works by key Finnish choreographers have been seen here. The group has always been close-knit and has had its own way of performing and dancing, and it has always been a strong trendsetter for me personally,” says choreographer Carl Knif.
The seven-member line-up consists of virtuoso dancers from Helsinki Dance Company and Carl Knif Company. The dancers in the work are Jonna Aaltonen, Jyrki Kasper, Pekka Louhio, Heidi Naakka, Mikko Paloniemi, Terhi Vaimala and Eero Vesterinen.
Dancer and choreographer Carl Knif worked for more than ten years as a freelance dancer in the works of Tero Saarinen , among others, before founding his own company in 2012. In addition to his own productions, Knif has made co-productions and commissioned works, and has been a guest choreographer and director at the Swedish Theatre, among others. In addition to Finland, Knif’s works have been seen in about ten countries.
William Iles is responsible for the lighting design and scenography. The costume designer is Karoliina Koiso-Kanttila, and the sound designer is Janne Hast. The camouflage is designed by Milja Mensonen.
