Explosion accident at the Helsinki City Theatre

At the time of the explosion, there was one person in the room performing the normal annual maintenance of the sprinkler system. The maintenance person is employed by an external company. The person was injured by the explosion, but was able to come out of the space on his own to the yard, where the staff of the City Theatre immediately began first aid. Technical Manager Henri Sneck called the emergency response centre at 12:04 and the rescue department arrived at the scene within a few minutes. The injured person was taken to the hospital for further treatment.

“We are shocked by the accident that has occurred, and we hope that the maintenance person will recover soon,” says Theatre Director Kari Arffman.

The police and rescue department have carried out an investigation, and so far they could not give a clear reason for the explosion. The police and rescue department have given the staff permission to continue working normally. The rehearsals for the autumn musical will begin as planned on 1 July.
