Helsinki City Theatre’s Shed theatre group’s Christmas for children and young people will have its re-premiere at Studio Pasila on 3 December. Director Heikki Sankari and composer Tuomas Kesälä have created a new musical play for the whole family, inspired by Charles Dickens’ classic work, in which Eppu Salminen plays Saituri and the children and young people of Shed in other roles.

The Miser’s Christmas takes place in 1800s England in a cotton factory owned by the evil and miserly Saituri. Christmas is coming, but there will be no break for the children working in the factory, and there will be no food. The miser wants tooth and nail to keep the machines running and the money taps clinking. The children decide to do something before The Miser takes over the Christmas spirit of the whole city.

“As Christmas approaches, it’s time to return to the Christmas of the Miser . With this script, I wanted to tell how important it is to love one’s neighbor and the power of community. With their help, it is possible to overcome even the most frightening adversities and melt the heart of even the most hardened one. The play’s 80 young people bring the spirit of Christmas and real Christmas spirit to the stage,” says Heikki Sankari , the director and screenwriter of the play.

A total of 80 Shedi children and young people will be seen in the roles. The miser is played by Eppu Salminen.

“It’s nice to be back again with familiar and new talented young people from a year ago to make a great Christmas production. The atmosphere at the rehearsals has been intense and I am impatiently waiting for the re-premiere. Soon we will be able to sing and dance to the great band as much as we like. What could be more wonderful than that!”, Eppu Salminen rejoices.

The set and costumes of the work were designed by Vilma Mattila and the camouflage by Henri Karjalainen. The lighting design is by Teppo Saarinen and the sound design by Samuli Peltonen. The choreographer has been Jyri Numminen.

The performance is suitable for the whole family from the age of 5.

Shed musical theatre gives children and young people aged 10–19 the opportunity to engage in hobbies and make a Christmas musical together with the professionals of the Helsinki City Theatre. With theatre as a hobby, children and young people get to not only act, but also dance and sing. The activities are made possible by the ShedHelsinki Foundation, which supports diverse child and youth work that takes special needs children into account.

Miser’s Christmas re-premieres on 3.12.2022 at 12 noon and 6 p.m. and performances until 17.12.2022 at the Helsinki City Theatre’s studio Pasila (Ratamestarinkatu 5).
