Performances of the musical Katrina continue at Lilla Teatern from March 12. The beloved musical, which is praised by audiences and critics, has earlier this year played successfully at Wasa Theatre and Åbo Svenska Teater. The musical has been seen by 16,000 people and the music has now been released on streaming services. Katrina premiered at Lilla Teatern on January 31, 2024 and it is a collaboration between the three theaters.
The newly composed music, created by award-winning composer Aili Järvelä, has been released on various streaming services. For now, four songs from the musical are available and the hope is to be able to record an entire album in the future. The recording has been made possible with the help of support from the Swedish Cultural Foundation in Finland.
“The audience has expressed a desire to return to the world of performance by listening to the music. The fact that we can now share it with the audience outside the theatre auditoriums is fantastic. Aili Järvelä’s compositions and Kaisa Lundán’s poetry are exceptional, and I hope that the performance will continue to live through music,” says director Jakob Höglund.
Sally Salminen’s Katrina (1936) is one of the most successful Finland-Swedish books of all time. It was an international success and has been translated into about twenty languages. The main character, Katrina, is the epitome of a strong and modern woman who walks through fire and water for her family and with sheer willpower steps over every obstacle that fate puts in her way.
Emma Klingenberg plays the role of Katrina and she is accompanied on stage by acting musicians Aili Järvelä, Ulriikka Heikinheimo and Senni Valtonen.
