Mother Ours touches deeply
When the themes of the play are parenthood, love life, career choice, deathencounter and illness, neither the actors nor the spectators
get away with just a little. Norwegian writer Lene Therese Teigen is
said that he wanted to write a demanding text for the play Mother
ours – Mater Nexus.
On the small stage of the Helsinki City Theatre on Wednesday
The play, which premiered, is captivatingly dense: nine women
as mothers, sisters, daughters, friends and partners. At the beginning of the play
the surface is beautiful and joyfully bubbly, but the roughness and the
The spectrum of emotions is soon revealed. Friendship hides jealousy, motherhood
selfishness, loneliness for independence. Everyone has lost their lives
and everyone needs love and acceptance the most in the end,
whether they came from a spouse, child or mother.
Teigen wrote his plays for nine women, each of whom
life story is presented as equal. There is not one thing in the play
protagonist, even though Tiia Louste as a career missile and mother is at the beginning of the story’s
central figure. The surprise party he organizes begins with a reunion
with joy, but it takes a really surprising turn. The façade is starting to fall
one after the other and the challenging rebuilding of relationships begins.
Even though Mother Ours is a demanding play and brings to the surface a lot of
own questions, its undertone is not gloomy. After all, life is a part of
disappointments, losses, and finally death. In addition to them, there are only
remember to live, rejoice and, above all, share life with loved ones.
The photographer, played by Marja-Leena Kouki, is freed from her great grief when she dares to face it in the play Our Mother.
