Review: Enron
Before the collapse
The energy company Enron has become a symbol of lies. Helsinki City Theatre shows what greed can achieve.
The energy company Enron was able to fool everyone. Its fraudulent activities were not revealed until 2001, when the company had already been operating in the United States for 15 years.
Directed by Kari Heiskanen , Enron is stylishly made. One could imagine that accounting crimes and the complex business world could not be turned into a play that would keep the viewer in their grip for two and a half hours. That was not the case. The performance is interesting and topical, good theatre.
Jeffrey Skilling, played by Eero Aho, is convincing, like someone straight from Wall Street. Seppo Maijala is an excellent choice for the position of President and CEO. Tiia Louste, who plays a senator, is as credible as the best politician.
The collapse of Enron hit about 20,000 employees hardest, who lost their pension savings tied up in the company. The company’s management had managed to accumulate huge fortunes for themselves.
The world is full of deception and injustice. It is important to tell it to all people through art.
