Review: Meidän poika
I endured everything until…
Our son depicts anxiety.
Ville Varisto (Hannes Suominen), a senior in the play Our Son, is basically an ordinary son of an ordinary mother. There are similar sensitive contemplators in every school class. She has been bullied throughout her school years. He has kept quiet about it, partly to protect his mother.
Finally, Ville feels so difficult that he has to do something. His anger breaks out. The boy builds a bomb and thinks to solve all the problems by blowing it up in the shopping center.
Our Son is a dark but truthful depiction of this time and the anxiety of young people. In the middle of the performance, it feels like sitting in a shopping centre and watching the young people go about their activities. During the final applause, it occurred to me that this is the kind of world we are applauding. The play’s working group – especially Merja Larivaara, Hannes Suominen and writer-director Pasi Lampela – deserve resounding applause for their wonderful work.
