Review: Kuka kaappasi auringon
“Who Captured the Sun was a great choice for my seven-year-old companion and also made me feel comfortable. However, it was difficult to stay on the bench at times, as the music of the two-hour play performed at Studio Pasila tempted even the child audience to join in. When Väinämöinen grabbed his kantele, it turned into a great rock instrument, with the help of which the wonderfully voiced Väinämöinen (Antti Timonen) took over the stage. I also enjoyed listening to Louhi’s (Sanna Saarijärvi) wonderful singing in her dark-toned, even symphonic solos.
Although there were only eight actors in total, the dance and battle choreographies designed by Arvo Jean-Michel Ärlig filled the stage with intensity and offered a lot to see. Katariina Kirjavainen’s boldly colourful set and costumes respected the visual look of Mauri Kunnas’s books and provided a nice counterbalance to the world that had lost its light due to the sun’s robbery.
In the midst of the turmoil of our world, the message of the play, which is shrouded in a tapestry of humour and music, is topical. It reflects on trust, its betrayal and reconstruction, and reminds us that the world needs us all together – the light and warmth that springs from ourselves. If one takes everything, the light disappears.”
