Review: Moulin Rouge! Musikaali
Sinfully gorgeous – Moulin Rouge!
Autumn 2024 is the year of great musicals! One of the films that has caused a stir in advance is Moulin Rouge! Musical.
The musical offers a delightful journey through time to Montmartre, populated by artists, thugs and prostitutes, as well as to the legendary Moulin Rouge nightclub in Paris!
Moulin Rouge! About the musical in brief
Moulin Rouge! In the musical, the viewer dives into the nightlife of Paris at the end of the 1800s, where everything is allowed in the name of love. The story follows the composer Christian (Martti Manninen), who has arrived from across the Atlantic and falls in love with a beautiful courtesan named Satine (Jennie Storbacka), whom he cannot have. The range of emotions offered by the story is enormous, which leaves no one cold.
The Moulin Rouge! Above all, the musical is a tribute to pop music, including more than seventy of the greatest hits of all time. Most of the lyrics of the songs are translated into Finnish.
The grand musical is part of a Nordic co-production involving Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Norway. It is based on the Oscar-winning film Moulin Rouge, directed by Baz Luhrmann. The screenplay is by John Logan. The language of the performance is Finnish.
The Nordic Moulin Rouge! The production of The Musical is directed by Anders Albien.
Truth. Freedom. Beauty. Love.
Moulin Rouge! The musical is an abundant journey of truth, beauty, freedom and, above all, love. The musical is honeyed hedonism at its best and oozes eroticism with almost every second. Even the beginning of the musical takes the viewer’s suspicions away, the musical is made to suit adult tastes.
The crowd scenes of the musical, which reaches an international level, are divine and offer viewers a visual fireworks; There is so much going on on stage at the same time that there would be enough to watch for several times. At the same time, the guaranteed hits that have been played on the radio over the decades wrap the listener in a sparkling emotional mantle, and it is almost impossible to stay still. Special applause to Ville Myllykoski and the 10-member super-talented band, whose virtuoso tunes sound confident and brilliant in the musical as they drift from one genre to another.
The abundant costumes, lighting and set design nicely support the colourful and dangerous time travel. The transition from one atmosphere to another is done in a stylish and smooth way for the viewer.
The acting is believable and partly breathtaking. The choreographies of the dances put the actors’ physiques to the test and their own heads spinning. The stage will really be taken over!
In addition to the musical’s superbly voiced main stars, Jennie Storbacka and Martti Manninen, I would like to highlight Harold Zidler, played by Risto Kaskilahti, who was at the same time comedic and sensitive, Matti Leino’s Santiago and Laura Allonen’s Niini’s lustful Bad Romance dance, and Marissa Latu, who stood out from the Ensemble in a seductive way. Bravoo!
Moulin Rouge! offered by the Helsinki City Theatre is the best musical I’ve ever seen. The only downside to this proposal is that it is difficult for future people to surpass this!
