Review: Pieni merenneito
I got into a fairy tale
After all, I was expecting something great. I knew that the costumes were wonderful and the set design was ambitious, that The Little Mermaid was the biggest musical at the Helsinki City Theatre. For the first ten minutes or so, I watched with admiration how wonderfully the undersea world has been created, how the mermaids tremendously wag their tails and hands, and how smoothly the stage moves from under the sea to the surface.
With that, I sank, sank into a fairy tale. I didn’t remember to think about how it could look like the Little Mermaid was actually swimming in the water. I didn’t think for a moment that actress Sanna Saarijärvi would play the evil sea witch Ursula wonderfully, because I just thought that the sea witch Ursula is horribly gorgeous. I was delighted by the butterflies flying around and the jumping frogs and, luckily, there was even a full moon when the prince and Ariel rowed.
On the way home in the subway, I didn’t look at my phone, at home the TV stayed off. I expected a lot from the musical, but not that I would get into the fairytale world like this as a middle-aged person.
I wouldn’t want to leave there.
