The Little Mermaid moved me to tears
Last week I was in Helsinki for a couple of days on a ventilation and theater trip. In the previous post, there is a story about the play Angry Widow, the premiere of which I was able to attend in cooperation with the Helsinki City Theatre. Another performance I went to see on my trip to Helsinki was the musical The Little Mermaid also at the Helsinki City Theatre. I had bought a ticket for this already in the spring.
My reader there on the other side of the screen, hand on heart: when was the last time you cried because you were so happy? For me, this happened while watching the finale of the musical The Little Mermaid. Suddenly, I just noticed tears rolling down my cheeks, I couldn’t do anything about the emotional turmoil.
The musical offers pleasure for all the senses. Set design, costumes, lighting, technology, music and acting, all areas work brilliantly. The illusion of water, of the underwater world, is complete. The viewer is left to sit and enjoy everything they see and hear.
Not many times have I heard such a handsome singing as the one performed by these heroes of the seas. Hiio hoi, your song sounds wonderful! The ship itself was worth seeing, how it moved and rotated in the sea.
The best part of the musical was the spectacular crowd scenes. Happy vibes, fine and successful choreographies, dance, singing, humour… wonderful!! In these crowd scenes, the abundance of set design, costumes and make-up came to the fore. Great job!
It was fun to watch Head Chef Louis being treated. Based on the laughter from the audience, it can be concluded that Louis took his audience. I think head chef Louis was the funniest character in the musical.
In good stories, good and evil fight. In the musical The Little Mermaid, everyone else was on the side of goodness except Ursula, the sea witch. Ursula with her tentacles and henchmen can be a bit scary for young viewers. Personally, I liked the character of Ursula, a real Drama Queen!
As always in fairy tales, good triumphs over evil and the prince gets his princess.
What brought me to tears? A little background, I have two daughters, now 24 and 25 years old. One of my daughters is a young person with special needs. Since he was a child, he has watched all the Disney movies and many times. You can probably guess that I’ve watched almost all Disney movies myself. With my daughters, I’ve been to the Walt Disney on Ice show many times. Disney’s stories have become familiar.
I was touched when I saw how my daughter enjoyed and fully empathized with the performance. Everything was crowned by a shower of soap bubbles, a wonderful climax. A feeling of happiness came over me when I saw my daughter’s reactions, it was definitely worth coming all the way from Oulu to see the musical. I was also moved by the story, true love always wins. I was also touched by the perfection of how well the entire team of creators succeeded, a full 10 points!
If you have the chance, go see The Little Mermaid musical. There are wonderful performances, colour, music, a wonderful fairytale world. Somewhere in the depths of our souls, there is that little child in each of us who loves stories that end happily. The Little Mermaid is like that.
Even though it’s gray and dark, let’s not let it affect us! A smile on your face and positivity in your mind, here we go!
