Composer Tim Minchin aims to surprise with music
Tim Minchin (born 1975) is an Australian songwriter, best known for his musical compositions for London Broadway and his role as Atticus Fetch in the series Californication. Minchin has been involved in numerous theatre productions and toured Australia, Europe, Canada and the United States with his musical comedy performances.
Minchin’s big breakthrough as a musical composer was the musical Matilda, based on Roald Dahl’s book. It premiered in London in 2013 and has since won more than 85 international awards. Matilda is one of the most popular and respected musicals of the 2010s.
Immediately after Matilda , Minchin began composing and writing lyrics for the musical Groundhog Day , which was the same creative team as Matilda. Groundhog Day premiered in 2016 at The Old Vic Theatre in London, and moved to Broadway in the spring of 2017.
According to Minchin, the challenge of Groundhog Day is to get the audience to care about the nasty protagonist. The film relies on the protagonist’s acting performance here, but in the musical, Minchin has tried to rise to the challenge by surprising the audience with music. The musical features fast, chaotic jazz as well as ballads and funny pastiches. For example, Hope sounds like an encouraging song at first to continue the days as a groundhog, until she realizes that it is actually about the main character Phill Connors’ attempt to end the days.
“The popularity of Groundhog Day is based on a balance between romantic comedy and existential crisis, and we didn’t want to spoil it,” Minchin says in an interview with Playbill. The music is meant to juxtapose the protagonist Phill’s various phases from hedonism to self-loathing. Phil goes through musical phases as he grows as a person through the events of the musical.
