Pertti Jarla’s wonderfully weird city was an instant classic of Finnish humour, and the comic strip now entertains more than a million Finns six days a week. This riotous comedy phenomenon, which has grown from a comic strip into a national institution, is now taking to the stage. The play serves up brand-new jokes alongside the unforgettable one-liners of familiar characters from the comic. Amid all the laughter, audiences may notice that present-day Finland is already beginning to look alarmingly like the world of Fingerpori.

It is a beautiful Sunday in the city of Fingerpori. Children are playing in the grounds of the nuclear power plant, Jesus is water jogging and Hitler is fishing in Fingerinlahti Bay. The idyll is suddenly shattered when the Mayor of Fingerpori, Homelius, summons Heimo Vesa to his office.

There is a crisis: the Finnish government intends to forcibly merge Fingerpori with Helsinki. The municipal merger must be stopped, and the government must be convinced that Fingerpori’s distinctive population and culture deserve to remain independent. Heimo Vesa is tasked with filming a video diary about life in Fingerpori to persuade the powers that be that the merger is impossible. Fingerpori is a comedy written by Petja Lähde and based on Pertti Jarla’s popular comic strips.
