Henkilö, jolla on kirkkaan siniset hiukset ja suuri sininen rusetti, jossa on vaaleanpunaisia pilkkuja, näkyy värikkään sanan Hairspray ja tekstin MUSIKAALIKOMEDIA alla valkoisella pohjalla.

Ruututakkinen mies nostaa mustavalkoiseen mekkoon ja saappaisiin pukeutuneen naisen olkapäänsä yli tanssiessaan lavalla; taustalla seisoo muita hahmoja dramaattisessa valaistuksessa.

Henkilö, jolla on kiharat vaaleat hiukset, laulaa intohimoisesti yllään värikäs mekko, jossa on violetteja ja vaaleanpunaisia pyörteitä, ja dramaattinen violetti höyhenboa mustaa taustaa vasten.

Ryhmä värikkäisiin pukuihin pukeutuneita näyttelijöitä tanssii ja hymyilee lavalla, ja edessä on nainen, joka ojentaa kätensä, ja mies, joka nojaa taaksepäin hänen vieressään. Taustalla on tuoleja ja liitutaulu, johon on kirjoitettu.

Vilkas lavaesitys, jossa suuri joukko värikkäisiin pukuihin pukeutuneita esiintyjiä tanssii kirkkaiden valojen alla; kolme esiintyjää, joilla on röyhelöisiä mekkoja, seisovat keskellä, kun muut tanssivat heidän ympärillään. Kolme laulajaa seisoo yläpuolella korokkeella.

Kaksi näyttelijää istuu näyttämöllä tiiviisti vierekkäin. Vasemmalla olevalla henkilöllä on kirkkaanvihreä kukkatakki, kun taas oikealla olevalla on keltainen paita ja ruudulliset housut. Molemmat näyttävät näyttämövalaistuksessa keskustelevan keskenään.

Värikkääseen, röyhelöiseen vaaleanpunaiseen mekkoon ja hienostuneeseen peruukkiin pukeutunut esiintyjä poseeraa lavalla, ja toinen henkilö sinisessä asussa ja valkoisessa peruukissa tanssii taustalla dramaattisessa valaistuksessa.

Suuri joukko värikkäisiin, retrotyylisiin pukuihin pukeutuneita esiintyjiä tanssii energisesti lavalla kädet kohotettuna eloisan, kuviollisen taustan ja näyttämövalojen edessä.

Keltaiseen paitaan ja ruudullisiin housuihin pukeutunut mies osoittaa innostuneesti hymyilevälle naiselle, jolla on sininen pilkkupusero ja teerihame, kun he seisovat lavalla, molemmat pukeutuneina eloisiin, retrotyylisiin pukuihin.

HAIRSPRAY’S TEENAGE ENERGY CATCHES ON WITH THE AUDIENCE If you pop into the women’s or men’s room of the Helsinki City Theatre before the start of the Hairspray musical, the message of the musical is clear at the latest. The spray bottles placed next to the washbasins tell it: It’s all about hair and varnish.

THIS IS HOW A LIGHT MUSICAL SHOULD BE PERFORMED Hairspray as the subject of a musical? Yes, and the strangest thing is that the topic works just fine. The text is not Shakespeare, but I have seen more owlish stories on stage. It’s 1962 in the United States, a fat and bullied teenage girl Tracy wants to be on TV on a Corny Collins show to dance and compete with skinny and rich girls for the title of Miss Hairspray offered by a hairspray company. And of course, Tracy also has to compete for the favor of the handsome youngster. Another thread in the story is the equality of blacks and whites and love that transcends racial boundaries when Penny falls in love with the black Seaweed, much to her mother’s horror. The viewer does not have to worry too much about the fate of the heroes at any point. Musical comedy now includes the fact that everyone is doing well, except the bad guys. The story is told smoothly and with inventive sets. Unnecessary time is not wasted on speeches, but people start dancing and singing when there is even a little reason to do so. There are enough musical numbers and they are good. Marc Shaiman has mastered the entire tradition of American musicals, and when he combines 60s rock, soul and white entertainment music, the result is a tasty combination. Shaiman also has a rare skill in creating wistful emotionality and fun in the same number: Tracy’s father and mother’s love duet You Are Ageless is irresistible performed by Pertti Koivula and Mikko Kivinen . Yes, the overweight mother is indeed Mikko Kivinen. You can guess if his role makes the audience laugh a lot or a lot. The number of performers is of a consistently high standard. Actually, the only flaw is the pronunciation of Caron Barnes , who otherwise performs so incendiary, Mikko Koivusalo’s Finnish translation is so clever that you wish you could understand it. American Gary Revel Jr has also learned Finnish, and when he dances loosely and sings excellently, the role is a perfect fit. Another similarly brilliant performance is Petja Lähde’s TV presenter Corny Collins. In the lead role of Tracy , Johanna Heimonen sings convincingly. Mikko Leppilampi is well suited to the role of the soft rock hero he plays, and judging by the screams, he is very much liked by female viewers. The structure also works, as the atmosphere accelerates all the time towards the end and there is a Broadway-style musical element in the finale. Down to the small roles, everyone knows how to dance strictly to the same beat.That’s how a light musical should be done: precise and fast-paced dancing, effective singing, spectacular sets, colorful costumes and really handsome playing. Fans of the genre don’t have to be disappointed, as it can be difficult to perform a musical like Hairspray better than this.

HAIRSPRAY SIZZLES WITH HAPPY ENERGY Helsinki City Theatre’s major investment this autumn, the musical comedy Hairspray , had its European premiere last Saturday on the theatre’s main stage. It has been advertised in advance as a big hit of this season, and it has quite strong hit ingredients, as I have rarely seen the audience show a standing ovation at the premiere of a musical. The musical, which premiered in the United States three years ago, has already garnered a lot of different awards, including eight Tony Awards, one of which was for Best Musical. Written by Mark O’Donnell and Thomas Mann , Hairspray is based on John Waters’ film of the same name from the late 80s. Making musicals based on films is one clear way of creating contemporary musicals.Another typical feature is the magnitude of everything, whether it is the number of performers, the music, the sets or the use of theatrical technology. In musicals, nothing is really small, not the twists and turns of the story, not the emotions or the characters. And in order to be able to meet these demands for greatness on stage, the creators of the musical must have both skill, sparkle and heart. And the team behind Hairspray has them. However, I also seem to sense that this time everything is deliberately overdone from the story onwards to the point where it becomes a tantalizing parody of the entire grand musical style.

HAIRSPRAY RECEIVED A STANDING OVATION The American creators of Hairspray who arrived also praised the Finnish versionThe premiere of the new musical at the Helsinki City Theatre on Saturday was a thrilling success. THE NOSTALGIA OF THE TUFT CAP WENT WILD The premiere of the City Theatre’s Hairspray had the ecstasy of a sports festival The World Championships in Athletics were also reflected in the Helsinki City Theatre. They brought forward the premiere of their autumn musical Hairspray to the competition week. Helsinki would then have more to show than just a rainy stadium.Were there a lot of sports people or tourists at the premiere? Obviously not, at least not in herds. By the way, the European premiere of the musical, which was otherwise a hit on Broadway, did have the joy and heroism of a sports festival – it’s a good thing that the audience didn’t start tiring the waves. At the end, the audience even jumped to their feet, applauding the creators on stage again and again. That’s quite rare in normal musical premieres.
