Internationally acclaimed and award-winning director Ene-Liis Semper directs the rising young stars of the University of the Arts Helsinki in her work Nimetön. Physical, energetic and moving, this wordless work draws on a physical language of movement and is inspired by photographs, paintings and frozen poses.

It begins with a group of young people on the beach. Summer. The world lies ahead – but what kind of world?

The movement begins. People arrive only to leave again. Business is done, work gets done, immense joy and unbearable pain are felt. And all the while, everything remains in constant motion, like an endless series of poses – the faces of the entire world seem to glide past the audience. A succession of piercing, instantly recognisable images. Vivid, affecting moments.

Might they convey something greater than words?

Nimetön explores things that are difficult to put into words. Things that every audience member is free to interpret in their own way.

This production is the third collaboration between the Theatre Academy’s Degree Programme in Acting at the University of the Arts Helsinki and Helsinki City Theatre.
