no-no
Our dance group Helsinki Dance Company brings one of the few classics of Finnish contemporary dance to the small stage. Kenneth Kvarnström’s no-no premiered at the Helsinki City Theatre in the autumn of 1996 and ushered in a new era of strong physical contemporary dance. This year, we are celebrating the 30th anniversary of the work and creating a new version of it for nine dancers.
Balancing between extreme physicality and sensual poetry, no-no opens up to the viewer as an intense movement ritual that speaks to body and soul. It is a dance work that does not explain its themes. It relies on dance that expresses itself, in itself.
As equal parts of Kenneth Kvarnström’s movement language, this total work of art is built by Jens Sethzman’s lighting and spatial design and music, which supports the dancers from ecstatic corporeality towards sacred reaching sensitivity.
In 1996, the Helsinki City Theatre’s dance troupe, no-no , premiered Finnish contemporary dance and captivated audiences both in Finland and on tour in Europe. The work was last performed at the Helsinki City Theatre to sold-out audiences in 2008.
