Culture’s godchildren

Hymyilevä nuori lapsi, jolla on viininpunainen hattu, jossa on höyheniä ja röyhelöinen kaulus, joka on tehty painetusta paperista, keltaista taustaa vasten.

Helsinki City Theatre is one of the actors in the Culture Sponsors project and one of the theatre sponsors for children born in Helsinki in 2021. The sponsor theatres offer two events a year in which the sponsored children can participate with their families. The events offered by theatres can be performances or atmospheric and unhurried art sessions for children and their immediate adults. The events are planned with the child’s age in mind and are suitable for all families.

Helsinki City Theatre’s sponsorship activities were launched in the autumn of 2021 with the Nice Journey! baby theatre performance.

In the autumn of 2022, the City Theatre invited the godchildren to take a peek into the depths of the theatre building
Toddlers in the Theatre events.

In the autumn of 2023, the godchildren were able to participate in the Carrot on the Run theatre concert on the big stage, where our theatre staff joined forces with the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra.

In the 2024 and 2025 seasons, the godchildren got to see the performance of Molli’s Evening Horse in the foyer of the small stage.

Iloinen, pörröinen eläin makaa selällään värikkäiden, kuviollisten tyynyjen välissä hymyillen silmät kiinni. Raidallinen kissa ja vihreä lintu lepäävät vieressä ja luovat leikkisän ja iloisen kohtauksen.

Every child born in Helsinki in 2020 or later will be sponsored by a cultural operator, through whom the child and their family will have a personal contact with art. The activities continue until the child starts school. The culture sponsor is determined by the child’s year of birth. The sponsor theatres for children born in 2021 are
the Helsinki City Theatre, the Finnish National Theatre, Svenska Teatern, Teatteri ILMI Ö., Q-teatteri and Puppet Theatre Sampo. Theatre events are free of charge and are organised not only in theatres but also in different parts of Helsinki. The

purpose of the Culture Sponsor Child activities is to increase the well-being and equality of families in Helsinki and to support the child’s growth and development through art and culture. The activities encourage people to see, hear and experience their hometown with a low threshold and to get to know its cultural places.

The Culture Sponsors project is administered by the City of Helsinki’s Culture and Leisure Division. The activities are made possible by a grant from the Jane and Aatos Erkko Foundation.

The children receive an invitation to become a Culture Sponsor Child from the maternity and child health clinic.
