Starring Malmi 2025-2027

Ryhmä värikkäisiin pukuihin pukeutuneita esiintyjiä seisoo rivissä ulkokattolavalla, ja yleisö istuu vasemmalla. Lavalla on kaupunkikatu, johon on kirjoitettu ZONE MALMI. Taustalla näkyy moderneja rakennuksia.

Our regional art project Malmi in the main role will be in Malmi in 2025-2027! Theproject plans and implements regional and community-based theatre activities.

Pääroolissa Malmi

In the Malmi project, the artists of the Helsinki City Theatre’s regional project will visit Malmi to carry out theatre and art activities together with local residents and local parties. The main role in Malmi is to study phenomena and topics arising from the area through the means of theatre art, and the project organises various events, workshops, art entities and performances. The purpose of the activities is to offer the residential area various opportunities for theatre and art participation and to support the area’s own cultural activities, also creating new forms of urban culture.

In the main role, Malmi’s artistic content is created inspired by the polyphonic area, and the material is produced together with the locals. At the heart of the activities is interaction between the residents of the area and artists. The artists who visit the area invite all residents of the area to participate in art activities – not only as spectators, but also as active actors themselves.

In the lead role, Malmi is part of the Helsinki City Theatre’s audience outreach and is led by theatre expression directors Laura Ikonen and Janne Puustinen, musician and sound designer Aleksi Kinnunen and audience worker Jenny Jumppanen.  In the main role, Malmi is one of the City of Helsinki’s Helsinki Model projects, and the activities are funded by the City of Helsinki.

THE PROJECT IS ONGOING:

Kolme ihmistä, joilla on liioitellut kasvonilmeet ja värikäs meikki, poseeraavat tiiviisti yhdessä sisätiloissa, joiden taustalla on keltaiset seinät ja sarjakuvamaiset ikkunakoristeet. Keskimmäisellä henkilöllä on raidallinen pusero ja hän hymyilee leveästi.

In the autumn season of 2025, we carried out neighbourhood-themed theatre and music workshops for daycare centres in Malmi, and based on the material we have received from them, we have prepared a touring children’s theatre performance: My Neighbour. The performance will premiere on 11.9.2026 at Malmitalo, after which it will go on tour to various performance and community spaces in Malmi.

In addition, we have organised Art for Homes events in the area. In the project Pääroolissa Malmi, community artists from the Helsinki City Theatre bring theatre and art activities to the Malmi district, working together with local residents and community groups. The project explores themes and phenomena emerging from the area through theatre, and organizes events, workshops, artistic productions, and performances. Its purpose is to offer diverse opportunities for participation in theatre and art, to support local cultural activity, and to create new forms of urban culture.

The content is inspired by Malmi’s diverse community and developed in collaboration with residents. Interaction between artists and locals is at the heart of the project: everyone is invited to participate in the artistic activities—not only as spectators, but also as active contributors.

In the lead role, Malmi is part of the Helsinki City Theatre’s audience engagement and outreach work. The project is led by drama instructors Laura Ikonen and Janne Puustinen, musician and sound designer Aleksi Kinnunen, and audience engagement operative Jenny Jumppanen. The project is one of the City of Helsinki’s Helsinki Model initiatives and is funded by the City of Helsinki.
