Steve Martin – a multi-talented entertainer
Steve Martin (b. 1945) is a prolific artist who has worked as a comedian, actor, producer, screenwriter and musician during his career of more than 50 years. Martin has received numerous Emmy, Grammy, Golden Globe Awards and American Comedy nominations for his work. In 2004, Martin was ranked among the top six comedians in the world by Comedy Central.
A career in entertainment was not part of Martin’s original plans. He studied philosophy for a few years at California State University, but dropped out of college when he was hired as a screenwriter for the TV show The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour in 1967. In addition to screenwriting, he worked as a stand-up comedian in the early part of his career, for which he was best known to the general public at the time.
In the 80s, Martin wanted to try his chances in the entertainment industry more broadly and started acting in films and making music. Martin has said that working and succeeding in different fields is not due to natural talent, but to the fact that he has the energy to polish the material he works with to his liking, night after night.
Martin has written two novels and three plays, of which Meteor Shower is the most recent. In addition, Martin has been writing for The New Yorker since the late 90s. In recent years, Martin has been touring the world together with his long-time friend Martin Short. The performance, which combines stand-up comedy and banjo music, can also be found on Netflix under the name Steve Martin & Martin Short: An Evening You Will Forget For The Rest Of Your Life.
