Arbitrary procedure for the first time on stage in Finland. Arbitrary procedure on stage for the first time in Finland

Mies ja nainen istuvat sängyllä hymyillen toisilleen. Miehellä on kädessään viinipullo metallisessa jääämpärissä, kun taas silmälasipäinen nainen pitää avattua kirjaa. Molemmat vaikuttavat rentoutuneilta ja onnellisilta.

Lena Andersson’s Arbitrary Procedure will have its Finnish premiere at Lilla Teatern. The Swedish author, columnist and literary critic Lena Andersson (b. 1970) will attend the premiere on 15 March.

Arbitrary Procedure is one of Andersson’s greatest successes, despite the fact that she herself did not expect more than 2000 readers. Arbitrary Procedure was published in 2013 and was awarded the August Prize the same year. The novel has since been translated into 21 languages and has had a total circulation of 500,000 copies. The main characters Ester Nilsson and Hugo Rask have become iconic, and in Karin Parrot Jonzon’s dramatization, they have now begun to conquer the theater stages.

The August Prize citation states that “the novel ‘Arbitrary Procedure‘ is a serious play in which Ester and Hugo meet in a timeless drama about passion and power, freedom and reason, which the author not only portrays but even dissects. With harsh humour and outstanding precision, Lena Andersson exposes the systematic self-deception of love.”

Lilla Teatern’s production is directed by Ann-Luise Bertell. The roles are played by Linda ZilliacusJohan Fagerudd, Emilia Nyman and Anja Bargum, the set design and costumes are made by Antti Mattila.

Arbitrary procedure on stage for the first time in Finland

Based on the bestselling novel by Lena Andersson (b. 1970), Egenmäktigt menetlus (Arbitrary Procedure) will have its Finnish premiere at Lilla Teatern. The Swedish author will arrive at the premiere of the play on 15 March.

Egenmäktigt menetlus (2013) is one of Andersson’s most successful works as a writer, columnist and literary critic, even though he himself suspected that it would only reach 2,000 readers. The August Prize-winning novel has been translated into 21 languages and has been printed in 500,000 copies. Karin Parrot Jonzon’s dramatisation (2015) brings the main characters, Ester Nilsson and Hugo Rask, who have become iconic characters, to the stage.

The justification for the August Prize states that “the novel Egenmäktigt menetlus is a serious play in which Ester and Hugo meet in a timeless drama about power, freedom and order, which the author not only perceives but even explores. With sharp humour and unique precision, Lena Andersson reveals the systematic self-deception of infatuation. ”

Lilla Teatern’s play is directed by Ann-Luise Bertell. The cast includes Linda ZilliacusJohan FageruddEmilia Nyman and Anja Bargum. The set and costumes were designed by Antti Mattila.
