At the end of 2020, Helsinki City Theatre’s audience outreach will implement the Art for Homes Kalasatama art project, which brings together moods and stories about the homes and their residents in the area. The project is part of the Kalasatama environmental art project funded by the City of Helsinki and a continuation of the Art for Homes events organised by the Helsinki City Theatre in northeast Helsinki, where performances were carried out in people’s living rooms and yards.

“So far, the Art for Homes performances have received a delightfully enthusiastic reception, and it is great to be able to implement the renewed concept now also in Kalasatama,” says Janne Puustinen , director of theatre expression from the project’s working group.

In the Art for Homes Kalasatama project, the homes of the residents of the area are made visible by means of a multimedia installation implemented in public space. The home collage, compiled from material collected from homes in Kalasatama, can be seen at the REDI shopping centre from 2 to 13 December. The combination of image, sound and text immerses the viewer in one possible sample of the people of Kalasatama and the atmosphere of the homes of the people of Kalasatama.

The project is carried out for the Helsinki City Theatre by a four-person group of artists from different fields. The participants include visual artist Sofi Häkkinen, musician and sound designer Aleksi Kinnunen, and theatre makers Janne Puustinen and Laura Ikonen, who together are responsible for both the collection of material and the design and implementation of the finished work.

“The residents of the area have boldly opened the doors of their homes to us and welcomed us with open arms despite the challenging times. We have been able to experience amazing dives into the everyday reality of the people living in Kalasatama, and now we are looking forward to condensing the essence of it all for the public to see,” the artists of the project enthuse.

The installation can be seen on the first floor of the REDI shopping centre, on the Skönen side, in the retail space opposite the Tokmanni department store from 2 to 13 December 2020 on weekdays from 3 pm to 8 pm and on weekends from 12 pm to 5 pm (Hermannin rantatie 5).
