Comedy novelty Threesome is a fast-paced relationship shooter
The autumn season of the Helsinki City Theatre’s Studio Pasila will be opened by French Clément Michel’s Threesome (Une semaine pas plus!, 2011) on 12 September. The new sitcom brings a genre familiar from TV to the theatre stage and closer to the audience.
Threesome aptly depicts today’s young adults solving age-old basic questions of relationships. It is a story for all those who have fallen in love, fallen in love, divorced or drifted to help a friend in a relationship emergency. Thefast-paced sitcom is directed by Liisa Mustonen, and the roles are played by a young trio of actors Elina Hietala, Jarkko Niemi and Olli Rahkonen.
Pauli (Jarkko Niemi) would like to break up with his girlfriend Sofia (Elina Hietala), but can’t say it directly, preferring to try to be abandoned himself. He asks his friend Martin (Olli Rahkonen) to live in their home so that Sofia gets tired of living in a shared apartment and leaves. However, Sofia is very understanding of men who behave strangely, and in the end it does, she is the one who surprises men.
“We get to follow closely ticking, completely dark and very recognizable situations up close. The salt of this work is recognizability, but above all the actors and their work. Situation comedy is an actor’s delicacy. It requires technique, a sense of rhythm, presence, the ability to take risks, dedication and precision. Fortunately, this book has a full house! The actors in the threesome exactly measure up to their measurements and make the wind blow,” says director Liisa Mustonen.
The play has been translated into Finnish by Reita Lounatvuori. The set and costumes were designed by Tellervo Syrjäkari. The lighting design is by Teppo Saarinen and the sound design by Maura Korhonen. The camouflage and hairstyles were designed by Aino Hyttinen.
In connection with the Threesome performances, the Helsinki City Theatre is testing the dynamic pricing of theatre performances, in which case the ticket price is determined by the occupancy rate of the performance and the time of purchase.
