Helsinki City Theatre is intensifying its cooperation with theatre schools. Siegfried , a co-production of the Theatre Academy of the University of the Arts Helsinki and the Theatre Work degree programme of the University of Tampere, will premiere on 12 March at Studio Pasila.
“Siegfried continues the collaboration with theatre schools that began in last autumn’s performance of The Scapegoat. Our hope is that future theatre makers will be able to get to know a large institutional theatre already during their studies, and at the same time, we will get to know new people just for the purpose of recruitment. I also believe that by working together, we learn new things,” says theatre director Kari Arffman.
Siegfried is a collaboration between Katariina Havukainen (Näty), Julia Jäntti (Teak) and Mikko Kauppila (Näty), who will graduate in 2019. Katariina Havukainen directs the performance and is responsible for the script and dramaturgy together with Mikko Kauppila. Mikko Kauppila performs on stage and Julia Jäntti is responsible for the lighting design. The dramaturgical framework is Pyotr Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake.
“Siegfried is set at the bottom of Swan Lake, where the light is refracted more sharply than usual. The performance is a queer reading of Tchaikovsky’s ballet, combining autofictional material with historical experiences of the skew. The fictional Prince Siegfried, King Ludwig II of Bavaria and the composer Pyotr Tchaikovsky are swimming in the mud. Our work is permeated by the phenomenon of the refraction of light, its laws at the interface of two separate phases, water and air. We produce images for the stage that combine the actor’s body, water, light reflections and different wavelengths,” the working group describes.
The performance will be seen at Studio Pasila a total of six times, after which the performance will tour different festivals and theatres.
Katariina Havukainen is a Helsinki-based actress and screenwriter. Katariina has acted in several TV series and theatre performances, including the lead role in the Tampere Workers’ Theatre’s production of Adalmiina’s Pearl . Katariina also works as a screenwriter at ITV Studios and writes live sketches for UIT’s revues and the TV show Putous, among others. She has worked as an assistant director at the Kom Theatre and Teatteri Vanha Juko. In addition, Katariina has written and directed performances for her own RVS art collective. Katariina will graduate with a master’s degree in theatre and drama in spring 2019.
Mikko Kauppila is a Helsinki-based actor and student of gender studies. Her latest theatre works include the Finnish National Theatre’s Musta Saara, her own poetry monologue Hevoseni Kvääri and the Turku Summer Theatre’s Vaahteramäki Eemeli. On the camera side, he has acted in several indie films and in the comedy series AIKUISET, which will be released this spring. In the autumn, she will be seen in the Helsinki City Theatre’s musical The Little Mermaid . In the spring of 2019, Mikko will graduate with a master’s degree in theatre and drama.
Julia Jäntti has been a messenger of abundance, bad taste and chance since 1993. She is currently based in Helsinki and is finishing her master’s studies in the Theatre Academy’s Degree Programme in Lighting Design. Jäntti is inspired by interdisciplinary, collectively shared stages and the diversity of authorship without the constraints created by positions. In addition, he is deeply delighted with everything that remains in the backwaters of the desired orthodoxy, ideal, optimal, well-considered choices and carefully honed materials. In addition to theatre performances, Jäntti has designed lighting for fashion shows and light festivals, among other things.
Siefried premiere 12.3.2019 at 7 pm and performances until 6.4.2019 at the Helsinki City Theatre’s studio Pasila (Ratamestarinkatu 5)
