The Helsinki City Theatre, which opened its doors last week after the renovation, has welcomed city residents to get to know the 50-year-old building and its operations. More than 2,300 people attended various free public events during the opening ceremony.
“The open house was a great way to meet the audience and theatre lovers in person and hear what is expected of the theatre. As a theatre director, it was also great to see the pride with which the staff presented their own workplace and their own professionalism,” says theatre director Kari Arffman.
The renovated theatre building and its repertoire were of interest to the audience during the opening weeks. The theatre’s programme was presented at the opening of the year on 14 August, not only to the media but also to the audience. The audience quota for the opening ceremony, 460 seats, was filled within a couple of hours of the start of registration.
During the premiere week of the season-opening musical Maija of Myrskyluoto , a total of 20 house tours open to the public were held from 21 to 27 August, with a total of 500 people participating.
On Friday, 25 August, the audience was invited to an open house evening and on Sunday, 27 August, to a theatre day for the whole family. At the open house events, the theatre’s various departments introduced themselves, and the audience was offered e.g. artist meetings, workshops, technical performances on the big stage, and behind-the-scenes visits and open rehearsals, among other things.
In honour of the opening, the theatre, in cooperation with the City of Helsinki’s Culture and Leisure Division, invited 200 Helsinki residents who had visited the city’s libraries and sports facilities with their companions to the invited guest premiere of Maija of Myrskyluoto on 23 August.
