Where are the great Nordic musicals? This is the question posed by the joint Nordic project The Nordic Voice and Lilla Teatern, the project’s principal in Finland, which will be sifting out gold nuggets from the Nordic musical potential over the next two years. Musical ideas are now being sought through open call. From the material received, a jury selects a selection for processing in workshops supervised by professionals. The goal is to support the creators’ creative process and, in the long term, increase the range of newly written Nordic musicals.

Jakob Höglund, artistic director and director, is delighted with the collaboration.

“At Lilla Teatern, we want to explore new musical theatre formats. Our goal is to create at least one musical theatre production a year and in the future more newly written musicals. We look forward to being involved in developing the Nordic musical field,” says Höglund, who sees Lilla Teatern’s connection to Finland’s largest musical stage, Helsinki City Theatre, as a great asset.

The Swedish and Norwegian performing arts fields are represented by Östgötateatern (SE), Smålands Musik & Teater (SE), Musikteaterforum (NO) and the Academy of Music Theatre (NO) – all central actors in theatre and musicals.

The Nordic Voice is a concrete continuation of the Musical Platform project, which was carried out in Sweden in 2017-2020.

“It is exciting to pass on the good experiences we have gathered over the years with the Music Platform project and to now be able to continue the project in Norway and Finland as well,” says Lena Uhlander, project convener and consultant at the Swedish TYP Cultural Endowment.

Open call in April 2021

The open call in Finland starts on 12 April 2021 and the application period ends on 31.8.2021. Musicals, lyrics and songs in Swedish are primarily welcome, but Finnish-language and multilingual material is also taken into account. Both professionals in the performing arts industry and non-established ones are welcome to apply.

The applications will be assessed by a jury and the selected entries will be invited to workshops at Lilla Teatern in the spring of 2022. During the workshops, professionals help the creators to refine and further develop their works, and hopefully this will open doors to clients and production decisions in the long run.

A more detailed description of the application procedure can be found here.

The Nordic Voice is funded by Nordic Culture Point and the Nordic Culture Fund.

Lilla Teatern is looking for new musicals through Nordic cooperation

Where are the great Nordic musicals? This is the question posed by the joint Nordic project Den nordiska rösten (The Nordic Voice) and the Helsinki City Theatre’s Lilla Teatern, which represents the project in Finland, and which is looking for new musical ideas to work on in workshops led by professionals through an open call. The aim is to support the creators in the creative process and enable the creation of new musical works.

Jakob Höglund, Artistic Director and Director of Lilla Teatern, is delighted with the project.

“At Lilla Teatern, we want to explore new forms of musical theatre. Our goal is to do at least one musical theatre production per year, and in the future, we want to create new musicals. We are excited to be involved in developing the Nordic musical field,” says Höglund, who sees Lilla Teatern’s connection to Finland’s largest musical stage, the Helsinki City Theatre, as a great advantage.

The Swedish and Norwegian theatre scene is represented by Östgötateatern (SE), Smålands Musik & Teater (SE), Musikteaterforum (NO) and Musikteaterhögskolan (NO) – all key actors in theatre and musicals.

Den nordiska rösten is a continuation of the Musikalplattform project, which was carried out in Sweden between 2017 and 2020.

“It is exciting to take the good experiences of the Musikalplattform project forward and now be able to share them in Norway and Finland,” says Lena Uhlander, the convener of the project and a consultant at the Swedish TYP Kulturkapital.

Open call in April 2021

The open call for applications for the Nordic Voices project will begin in Finland on 12 April and continue until 31 August 2021. Primarily, we are looking for musical ideas, text summaries and music samples in Swedish, but material in Finnish and other languages will also be taken into account. Both professionals in the field and future musical theatre experts can apply.

The jury will evaluate the applications and invite some of the authors to workshops to be held at Lilla Teatern in the spring of 2022. In the workshops, professionals in the field help the creators to network and further develop and finalize their works. The aim of the project is to open doors for the creators in the direction of clients and production decisions. In the long term, the project aims to increase the supply of musical theatre in the Nordic countries.

The Nordic Voice project is funded by Nordic Culture Point and the Nordic Culture Fund.
