Martti Suosalo’s masterful monologue The Best of Life will visit the Helsinki City Theatre’s small stage from 1 February. The hopeful and sadly funny play tells the story of a boy who tries to cheer up his depressed mother and lists the things that make life worth living. Things that everyone should recall from time to time.
The play, written by British author Duncan Macmillan together with Irish stand-up comedian Jonny Donahoe , is characterised by the way the play is performed together with the audience. Thus, already in the performance information, it is stated that the play will be performed by Martti Suosalo and the audience.
“Yes, the audience will be able to participate in the making of the play, but there is no need to be afraid of it. Everything takes place very safely and warmly, and not a single person has refused to join,” Martti Suosalo reassures.
“You shouldn’t be scared of the topic either. The boy wants to cheer up his seriously depressed mother, but in the end he does it for himself, so that he can live in the situation. There is a warm sense of humour, and I have to admit that The Best in Life is even an entertaining performance, despite its tough topic!”, Suosalo sums up.
The play is directed and translated into Finnish by Pentti Kotkaniemi. The lighting designer is Petri Suominen and the sound designer is Tuomas Rissanen.
The Best in Life premiered at the Turku City Theatre in January 2018.
The Best in Life, Helsinki premiere 1.2.2019 and performances until 16.5.2019 on the small stage of the Helsinki City Theatre (Eläintarhantie 5)
